Pottery Studio Manager
Reports To: Executive Director
Position Overview: We’re looking for a hands-on, creative, and organized person to manage our pottery studio. This role is perfect for someone who loves ceramics, enjoys working with people, and can keep a busy studio running smoothly.
The Pottery Studio Manager oversees the daily operations of the pottery studio, ensuring a safe, welcoming, and creative environment for members, students, and staff. This role combines administrative, technical, and customer service responsibilities. The Studio Manager coordinates classes, maintains equipment and supplies, supports instructors and artists, and fosters a positive community culture.
The position will begin at 10 hours per week. Pay for this position is $20 per hour, on a contract basis. The pottery studio manager may work more hours as a teacher as business allows.
Key Responsibilities
Studio Operations & Maintenance
Oversee day-to-day operations of the pottery studio.
Ensure all equipment (kilns, wheels, pug mills, slab rollers, etc.) is maintained, cleaned, and in safe working order.
Schedule kiln firings and maintain firing logs.
Manage studio supply inventory (clay, glazes, tools) and place orders as needed.
Monitor studio cleanliness and organize regular deep cleaning sessions.
Staff & Instructor Support
Hire, train, and supervise studio assistants, volunteers, and part-time staff.
Support instructors in scheduling and classroom setup/cleanup.
Ensure health, safety, and studio policies are followed by all staff, instructors, and students.
Programming & Community Engagement
Coordinate class schedules, workshops, and special events.
Assist with marketing and communications for studio programs.
Maintain positive relationships with members, students, and the broader arts community.
Support exhibitions, open studio events, and community outreach programs.
Administrative & Financial
Manage studio calendar and share details with appropriate staff
Provide regular updates and reports to leadership.
Enforce studio policies, membership agreements, and facility use guidelines.
Work with the Executive Director on budgets, expenses, and revenue related to studio programs and supplies.
Health & Safety
Maintain compliance with OSHA and local safety regulations.
Train staff and members on safe equipment use, glaze handling, and kiln operation.
Document and report any incidents or equipment issues promptly.
Qualifications
Strong knowledge of ceramics processes, equipment, and materials.
Previous pottery studio management or teaching experience preferred.
Excellent organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working with diverse groups.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (clay bags, kiln shelves, etc.).
Standing, bending, and lifting required during routine studio operations.
Flexible hours are required, including evenings and weekends.
