The Power of Showing Up

As I sat down to write this month’s newsletter, I found myself a little stuck—not because there was nothing to say, but because there is so much. We’ve moved into a new building, new classrooms are buzzing with music and art, and new routines are forming. In the middle of all that excitement, one theme kept rising to the top: the power of showing up.

Sometimes the most important part of learning isn’t talent or motivation—it’s simply showing up.

At the Arts Hub, we see this every day. Students arrive after school, juggling homework, sports, buses, and busy schedules. Some walk in excited, others unsure. But once they’re here—instrument in hand or paint on their fingers—something shifts.

Showing up builds confidence and engagement. Research shows that students who participate in arts education have higher attendance rates and are more likely to stay engaged in school. Schools with strong arts programs also report higher graduation rates and improved academic outcomes. Consistency matters, and being present is often where growth begins.

Arts participation also strengthens critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills—abilities that benefit students far beyond the classroom. Just as importantly, ongoing involvement in music and art supports emotional well-being, helping students build resilience, self-expression, and a sense of belonging.

When students show up regularly, they learn that progress doesn’t happen all at once. A song gets smoother. A drawing becomes clearer. A recipe turns into a family gathering. A day becomes brighter. These moments don’t come from perfection—they come from persistence.

Showing up also builds community. Friendships form, encouragement grows, and students realize they are part of something bigger than themselves.

This new building and everything happening inside it exist because others showed up too. To all of the volunteers who did the not-so-fun things, like stocking toilet paper, mopping floors, clearing cobwebs, or hauling furniture, you made the Hub possible. To the donors who gave their resources, we know that a thousand different organizations are competing for your attention. We are honored that you chose us. You didn’t just help build a space—you helped build a community.

Thank you for showing up for the Arts Hub. It truly makes all the difference.
