A Show Born Over Beer

The concert traces back to an ordinary conversation between Jerry Lyons and John Turner at Jerry's own Recluse Brewing, the kind of easy music chat two friends have over a pint. Talk turned, as it often has, to musical heroes, and Jerry mentioned he'd been following Corky Siegel's career since the Siegel-Schwall days of the late 1960s and early '70s, all the way through Corky's current duo work with Randy Sabien.

"Do you think we could get them to come to Waupaca?" Jerry asked.

"Let's try," John said.

What started as a long-shot idea turned into a fully booked show and then, with encouragement and support from the Waupaca Community Arts Board and The Arts Hub, into a full community fundraiser, backed by a lineup of local business sponsors. All proceeds from ticket sales go directly to the Arts Hub.

It's a fitting story for a night built entirely on the idea that community and music make each other stronger. It stands as a small case study in what's possible when someone actually makes the ask.

About the Artists

Corky Siegel is a co-founder of the legendary Siegel-Schwall Band and a Blues Hall of Fame inductee, known internationally as one of the world's great blues harmonica players, blues pianists, and singer-songwriters. He is also the sole pioneer and composer of Chamber Blues and Symphonic Blues, genre-defying works that fuse blues and classical forms, recorded on labels ranging from RCA and Alligator to the iconic classical label Deutsche Grammophon. Siegel's early associations with the Chicago blues masters and his role in the blues-rock revolution have made him, as Downbeat Magazine put it, an "underappreciated national treasure." Billboard Magazine called him "a piano and harmonica virtuoso of remarkable invention and wit," while the Washington Post simply declared: "Corky Siegel is a phenomenon."

Randy Sabien is a pioneering American jazz violinist, composer, and music educator. At just 21 years old, he founded and chaired the Jazz Strings department at Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music, going on to a career defined by a vibrant, rhythmically intense style that fuses jazz, blues, rock, and western swing. Sabien has performed on A Prairie Home Companion and Austin City Limits, and is a regular at Big Top Chautauqua. National Public Radio's Jazz Profiles dubbed him "the past, present, and future of jazz violin."

Together, Siegel and Sabien bring a show that's equal parts virtuosic and genuinely funny: a mix of humorous storytelling, insightful songwriting, and instrumental fireworks from two musicians who've spent decades at the top of their respective genres.

"Words are useless... people stomping their feet and letting out whoops of joy. Do your eyes and ears a favor — go and see this show." — St. Paul Pioneer Press
